In Her Hands. 2019

Co-designed by Dennis Golding, Carmen Glynn-Braun and Kirra Weingarth Painted by Jo Breneger and Leia Sidery
In her hands was commissioned by UNSW in 2019 to celebrate the naming of this building after Esme Timbery. This is the first of an ongoing mural project designed to support creative exploration and visual contemporary practice at UNSW.
Artists’ Statement
An important aspect of this mural is the rhythmic topographical lines that reference the La Perouse headlands and sandstone. These canvass the location of the Timbery family’s rich cultural traditions. Across the wall bold colours bring this mural to life, celebrating and echoing Esme’s signature colours. You can see hues of pink, yellow and pearlescence, which reflect Esme’s unique artistic expression.
This poetic narrative pays homage to Esme’s cultural legacy as a strong Aboriginal elder and artist. This design connects the wider community with the cultural narratives that echo across and from the land they walk upon. A powerful reminder that the UNSW Kensington campus is located on Bidjigal land.
